Firm founder, Thomas R. Smith, CPA has a vast knowledge of tax, accounting, and the ever-changing economic environment. His interests center around financial markets and real estate while his experiences allow him to envision a roadmap to help clients evolve businesses, care for current needs, and plan for future generations. His entrepreneurial spirit continues to be an asset to both the firm and clients alike.

John Parsley, CPA, CVA, and Aimee McWhorter, CPA, CFP®, each with over ten years of experience, strive to solve clients’ problems before being asked. Along with a strong work ethic and regular client contact, our firm demonstrates a proactive approach in working with each client.

Thomas R. Smith, CPA

NC Certificate # 7118

Born: Rocky Mount, NC in 1948

Education: B.S. in Accounting from Barton College in 1970

Professional Activities: Certified Public Accountant since 1973. Managing Partner of Smith, Parsley & McWhorter, P.A., having founded the firm in 1983. Prior experience includes six years as Vice President of Finance for a parent-subsidiary operation of building supply stores, millwork manufacturing, wholesale distribution, real estate development and property management. Member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the North Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants. Since 1997, a member of the Board of Directors and Audit Chairman for a $2.2 Billion state chartered Bank and Holding Company. Prior to that, on the Board of Directors of a $300 Million Bank Holding Company that later merged with a Regional Bank.

Practice Concentrations: Business planning, real estate development, construction and management, tax planning, estate planning and mergers and acquisitions.

Community Involvement: Elder at the First Presbyterian Church of Lexington, Treasurer of the Davidson County Community College Foundation, and Member and former Chairman of the Davidson County Economic Development Commission. Past activities include Treasurer of the University of North Carolina School Of The Arts Foundation, President of the J. Smith Young YMCA, President of the Lexington Civitan Club, and on the Board of Directors of Lexington Memorial Hospital.


John E. Parsley, CPA, CVA

Born: Hialeah, FL in 1972

Education: B.S. in Accounting and Master of Accountancy from UNC-Wilmington Cameron School of Business 1995, 1996.

Professional activities: Certified Public Accountant since 2001, Certified Valuation Analyst January 2009. Member of American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and North Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants. Partner with Smith, Parsley, & McWhorter since 2005.

Practice Concentrations: Accounting services and tax planning and preparation for individuals and various business industries including real estate, wholesale, professional service, manufacturing, medical, construction, among others. Business valuations for sales or mergers of businesses, gift and estate tax, divorce. Retirement plan administration.

Aimee S. McWhorter, CPA, CFP®

Member of North Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants and American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Partner with Smith, Parsley, & McWhorter since 2005. Deloitte and Touche tax staff accountant 1999-2000.
